Ireena Kolyana was adopted at an early age by Kolyan Indirovich, Burgomaster of the Village of Barovia. Kolyan was an attentive father, and he raised both Ireena and his biological son Ismark Kolyanovich to follow in his footsteps and become leaders of their community; not an easy position to hold in the shadow of Castle Ravenloft.
Some time ago, Strahd took a more than passing interest in Ireena. Twice he charmed his way into the Indirovich mansion to spend time with Ireena, and though he bit her both times—leaving her memories of the encounters vague—she knows that he still desires her, and that he killed her father when he dared to object.
After her encounters with Strahd, the villagers in Barovia became afraid of Ireena (or possibly of what might happen to them if proximity to her would put them under the dark lord’s gaze), and so her older brother Ismark turned to a group of outsiders to escort her out of the Village of Barovia to Vallaki.
During the journey west, Ireena developed a fondness for her escorts, particularly Grey Mournespire (to whom she has a strong physical resemblance) and Tom Mason, though her relationship with the latter has been strained since he accidentally revealed to her that she was adopted while discussing the deception (perpetrated by Arrigal) that lured both he and Thud to Barovia.
While the party conducts business in and around Vallaki, Ireena is staying at the Blue Water Inn under an assumed name, where she’s become acquainted with Arabelle—a Vistana child whose life Tom and Ireena saved en route to Vallaki, and Rictavio, a travelling storyteller and fellow guest at the inn.
