Curse of Strahd
Late Burgomaster of the Village of Barovia
Before his death “from fright” caused by Count Strahd von Zarovich, Kolyan Indirovich was the Burgomaster of the Village of Barovia. Due to the village’s proximity to Castle Ravenloft, Indirovich had the unfortunate job of representing the community that most frequently faced Strahd’s wrath, a burden he bore with as much dignity as he could muster.
Ismark raised both of his children to follow in his footsteps: his biological son Ismark Kolyanovich, and his adopted daughter Ireena Kolyana. Though one of his children was adopted, Indirovich showed no favoritism towards one child over the other. However, it was assumed that Ismark would inherit Burgomastery simply because he was the eldest child.
As the children grew up, Strahd began to take an interest in Ireena. The Indirovich family—and Ireena specifically—was invited to dine at Ravenloft several times, but the Burgomaster forbade his daughter from going for fear of the dark lord’s intentions. Eventually, Strahd began to call upon Ireena in person at the Burgomaster’s mansion in Barovia. At first, Indirovich was unable to resist Strahd’s supernatural charms, and permitted the vampire inside to see his daughter. When he mustered the will to object to Strahd’s advances toward Ireena, Strahd laid siege to house with the possessed beasts of the land as his army. The elderly Burgomaster succumbed to the stress, though Ismark and Ireena were able hold out until the siege ended.
Two weeks later a party of outsiders arrived in Barovia, lured there by a letter Strahd had written and signed with Indirovich’s name. Ismark and Ireena enlisted their aid in transporting Indirovich’s body to the local cemetery for burial. Despite another attack by Strahd’s forces, Indirovich was successfully laid to rest.
